What It Is

What Is Thai Stretch Massage?

Thai stretch massage is a clothed, mat- or table-based treatment in which a trained therapist moves your body through assisted stretches while applying rhythmic compression along the muscles. Rooted in traditional Thai bodywork, it targets the hips, hamstrings, shoulders, and spine — the areas that shorten and stiffen from sitting, driving, and training.

Unlike a typical oil massage, you stay actively (but effortlessly) involved: the therapist guides each stretch to your edge, holds it as you breathe, then releases. The result is a range of motion you can't reach stretching alone — because someone else is providing the leverage, the angle, and the patience.

At Avy Spa, Thai stretching is available two ways: as a full dedicated session, or as a 15-minute enhancement (+$15) added to the end of any massage. This page covers the full session; the enhancement is on our enhancements menu.

Who It Helps

Made for Bodies That Sit Too Much or Train Too Hard

Tight Hips & Hamstrings

The signature complaint of desk work and long commutes. Assisted stretching opens what self-stretching can't quite reach.

Athletes & Runners

Restore range of motion between training blocks, ease post-race stiffness, and keep stride mechanics smooth.

Lower Back Relief

Tight hips pull on the lower back. Lengthening the hip flexors and hamstrings often eases low-back strain at its source.

Stiff Shoulders & Spine

Gentle spinal twists and shoulder openers counteract hours of forward-hunching at a screen.

Flexibility Goals

Consistent assisted stretching builds lasting mobility — many guests book monthly as maintenance.

People Who Hate Oil Massage

You stay fully clothed in comfortable attire. All the release, none of the oil.

Your Session

What a Session Feels Like

01

Arrive in comfortable clothes

Wear anything you could stretch in — leggings, joggers, a tee. No oil, no undressing. Free parking at our door on El Camino Real.

02

A short mobility check

Your therapist asks where you're tight, what you do all day, and any injuries — then plans the sequence around your body, not a script.

03

Compression, then stretch

Rhythmic palm and thumb pressure warms each muscle group first; then the therapist guides you into the stretch and holds it while you breathe. Never forced, always within your comfort.

04

Leave taller

Sessions close with gentle spinal twists and neck release. Most guests describe walking out feeling "unfolded" — looser, taller, lighter.

Which Should You Book?

Thai Stretch vs. Oil-Based Massage

Choose Thai Stretch if…

  • Tightness and limited range of motion are your main complaint
  • You want to stay fully clothed, no oil
  • You sit most of the day, or you're an athlete between events
  • Foam rolling and self-stretching stopped making progress

Choose Deep Tissue or Sports Massage if…

  • You have a specific painful knot or trigger point
  • Soreness and muscle fatigue outweigh stiffness
  • You prefer classic table massage with oil
  • See our back pain and sports recovery pages

Can't decide? Many guests combine them: a 90-minute massage with the 15-minute Thai stretching enhancement at the end.

Good to Know

Thai Stretch Massage FAQs

Do I stay clothed during Thai stretch massage?

Yes. Thai stretch massage is performed fully clothed with no oil. Wear comfortable, flexible clothing such as leggings or joggers — we can also provide loose attire if you're coming from the office.

Is Thai stretching painful?

No. Each stretch is taken to a point of productive tension — a "good stretch" feeling — and held while you breathe. Your therapist checks in constantly and never forces a position. Tell them your comfort level at any time.

How is this different from stretching on my own?

A therapist provides leverage, precise angles, and passive relaxation you can't achieve alone — your muscles release further when you're not the one holding the stretch. Assisted stretching consistently reaches ranges that self-stretching and foam rolling plateau at.

How long is a session and how often should I come?

Full sessions are 60 or 90 minutes. For chronic tightness, every 1–2 weeks at first works well; for maintenance, monthly is a comfortable rhythm. The 15-minute enhancement can be added to any massage, any visit.

Is Thai stretch massage good for lower back pain?

It often helps, because tight hip flexors and hamstrings are a common hidden driver of low-back strain. Lengthening those muscles reduces the pull on the lower back. For acute or nerve-related pain, see a physician first — massage complements medical care.

Can beginners or inflexible people book this?

Absolutely — inflexible bodies benefit the most. Every sequence is adapted to your current range. There is no flexibility prerequisite, and nothing about the session is performative.
