The Grounding — Ashiatsu Back Walking

Depth That Hands Can't Reach. Smoothness You Won't Expect.

There's a kind of tightness that builds slowly — months, sometimes years without a massage — until your back feels less like muscles and more like one solid, stubborn plate. Thumbs and elbows can chip away at it. Back walking melts it.

In this ashiatsu barefoot technique, your therapist holds overhead bars for balance and glides across your back with the broad, smooth surface of their feet — powered by controlled body weight instead of arm strength. The result is pressure that's dramatically deeper than hands can deliver, yet feels rounder, smoother, and surprisingly luxurious.

Because each stroke covers so much muscle at once, deeply held tension releases fast. It's the session we recommend most to guests who say two things: "it's been forever" and "the deeper, the better."

Why Feet Go Deeper

Hands vs. Back Walking — What Makes It Different

A therapist's hands are precise but small, and even the strongest arms tire. Body weight never does. Here's what changes when the pressure comes from above.

Traditional Deep Tissue (Hands) Back Walking (Ashiatsu)
The pressure source Arm and hand strength — thumbs, palms, elbows Controlled body weight, delivered through the broad surface of the foot
Depth Deep, within the limits of hand strength The deepest sustained pressure available in massage — adjustable from gentle to profound
How it feels Focused, pointed — sometimes sharp on very tight muscles Broad, rounded, gliding — deep without the "pokey" feeling of elbows
Coverage per stroke A few inches at a time The entire width of your back in a single gliding pass
How fast tension releases Gradual — very tight backs may need the whole session to warm up Fast — large muscle groups soften within minutes, leaving more time for the stubborn layers underneath
Best for Detailed, specific work on individual areas Whole-back tightness, long gaps between massages, and guests who always ask for more pressure

Deep Never Means Out of Control

Our therapists are specifically trained in ashiatsu and use overhead bars to control precisely how much weight reaches you — from feather-light to nearly full. Pressure never rests on the spine itself, and a single word from you adjusts the depth instantly. Most guests' biggest surprise? How smooth the deepest massage of their life turns out to be.

Made for Backs That Have Waited Too Long

"It's Been Years"

Life got busy, and massage kept sliding down the list. When tension has had that long to settle in, broad body-weight pressure is the fastest way to reset the clock.

"One Solid Knot"

When your whole back feels uniformly tight — not one spot, but everything — you need coverage and depth at the same time. That's exactly what feet deliver and fingers can't.

"Deeper, Please"

You've spent entire massages asking for more pressure. Here, "more" is finally on the menu — smooth, sustained, and as deep as you want to go.

"I Need This to Work Fast"

Big event, big week, or simply no patience left for gradual. Because every stroke covers the full width of your back, release happens in minutes, not sessions.

Your Session, Step by Step

What to Expect During Back Walking

If you're picturing someone simply standing on your back — it's far more refined than that. Every moment is controlled, communicated, and adjusted to you.

1

Settle In

A short consultation covers your pressure preference and anything we should know. Then you settle face-down on a heated table, fully draped.

2

Warm the Ground

Your therapist begins with lighter gliding strokes, letting your back warm and soften before any depth is added.

3

The Walk

Holding overhead bars for perfect balance, your therapist glides across your back with long, deep, body-weight strokes — always beside the spine, never on it — adding depth only as your muscles welcome it.

4

The Stubborn Layers

Once the surface releases, focused foot pressure works the deeper bands along your shoulders, mid-back, and hips — the layers regular massage rarely reaches.

5

Land Softly

The session closes with slow, calming strokes, a warm towel, and a few quiet minutes. Stand up. Feel how much lighter "upright" can be.

Back Walking FAQs

What is back walking massage, exactly?

Back walking — also called ashiatsu barefoot massage — is a deep massage performed with the therapist's feet instead of hands. Using overhead bars for balance and precise control, your therapist glides body-weight pressure across your back with a depth and breadth hands simply can't match.

Is it safe?

Yes. Our therapists are specifically trained in ashiatsu technique. The overhead bars let them control exactly how much weight is applied, pressure never rests on the spine itself, and you can adjust the depth with a single word at any moment.

Does the therapist put their full weight on me?

Only as much as you want — anywhere from a fraction to nearly all of it. Most guests are surprised by how smooth and comfortable deep barefoot pressure feels compared to elbows or thumbs.

I haven't had a massage in years. Is this too intense to start with?

It's actually one of the best ways to come back. The pressure builds gradually, the foot's broad surface feels rounder and gentler than pointed hand work, and the wide coverage means long-held tension releases quickly instead of taking multiple sessions.

How is this different from deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue uses hands, forearms, and elbows for detailed, specific work. Back walking uses smooth, broad, body-weight strokes for maximum depth over maximum area. If your whole back is tight, back walking gets there faster — and many guests find it smoother.

Will I be sore the next day?

Some guests feel a gentle, workout-like heaviness for a day, especially after a long gap between massages. Drink plenty of water — your back will feel noticeably looser within a day or two.

What should I wear?

You'll be professionally draped throughout, just as in any massage. Your therapist works with clean draping or massage oil depending on your preference, and your comfort is protected at all times.

Is back walking right for everyone?

Most guests can enjoy it, but we don't recommend it during pregnancy or for guests with certain bone or circulation considerations. Mention anything relevant when you book and we'll guide you — our prenatal and Swedish massages are lovely alternatives.

Your Back Has Been Patient. Reward It.

Every month you've postponed is a layer waiting to let go. One session of back walking, and you'll remember what your back felt like before it started keeping score.
